  • My Story

The king penguin lives in the harsh antarctic region, but breeds on sub-antarctic islands such as the Falkland Islands. King penguins are famous for their incredible trips to the Antarctic polar front to get food for their chicks, travelling 300-500km over 7-10 days before returning. But the Antarctic polar front is shifting even further southwards due to climate change, making the amazing king penguin travel even further to find food for its chicks. While they can do so up to 700km, by 2100, it is expected that up to 70% of king penguins has to find new breeding locations. Luckily, there are some candidate islands, and king penguins may be able to move their colonies. We only need to hope that these islands will not remain too harsh for the penguin chicks by the time that the Falkland Islands become an unworkable breeding spot, or we may be instead be losing 70% of our beautiful king penguins.
