My Story
Puffins feed on small fish, and can dive up to 60 meters deep to catch them. Such fish are abundant in cool areas. But due to global warming, those areas are moving further away from the puffin's homes. Since 2015, the puffin has been listed as "vulnerable" after its population decreased from 7 to 5.4 million. That may seem like a lot, but while the average puffin lives about 20 years, their chicks are not making it because their parents cannot find enough food for them.
But the children of Heimaey, a small island south of Iceland, have come to help the chicks of Heimaey. In spring, the chicks that got enough food will set out to fly out for the first time, guided by light. But the village lights may distract them, and instead of to sea, they end up on the village streets. Here, the heroes of Heimaey come in: children collect the lost chicks and bring them to Heimaey's acquarium and museum, where they get measured and tagged before being released - this time into the right direction.
